Spooky Graphic Novels for the Halloween Season

What could be more Halloween then a creepy book to read? A creepy graphic novel where you can see the scary unfold!

Graphic novels are a great way to visualize the books you are reading, and they continue to get more popular among readers daily. They are the best gateway-book to get non-readers over into the reading world. Especially during Halloween, it’s a great way to visualize the haunting and get into the spooky spirit.

  1. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Of course for Halloween its only right to start with a Neil Gaiman book. This is a Bibliocrunch favorite of Neil Gaiman books and adapted into a novel makes it just the best thing for Halloween. Though it’s a kid’s book, it is actually more suited for adults. It includes a lot of serious topics, including murder, revenge, and even attempted child kidnapping all centered around a boy named Nobody Owens who lives in a graveyard and has amazing and spooky adventures. It’s a great read for any age, and absolutely perfect for October.

  1. Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

This isn’t scary, but it includes a plethora of monsters all rolled into one little girl who will make you laugh and even tear up at times. A 2015 National Book Award finalist, this book has beautiful art and hilarious jokes. Nimona is a hardcore, fearless girl who is looking for greatness. This is a great Halloween, as well as year round, read.

  1. From Hell by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell (illus.)

This is the first really scary graphic novel in our list. This book is a black and white graphic novel about the exploits of Jack the Ripper, the 1800s serial killer of London. This one is particularly creepy because it is based on real history. If you want a creepy, fun read, this one is definitely worth the read.

  1. Black Dog: The Dreams of Paul Nash by Dave McKean and Various Authors

Something that is haunting as opposed to creepy and scary can still be great for a Halloween read. This book is also filled with real life stories. Black Dog is filled with real soldier’s memoirs about war and how to deal with pain from extreme situations. The illustrator has won multiple awards for best graphic album, and this novel is no exception to his amazing talents. Its surrealistic style is something you will really want to see, and its stories have the perfect amount of haunting for a chilling read.

  1. Books of Magic by Neil Gaiman and Various Authors

If you love Harry Potter, this is a graphic novel you will love. In fact, this was written seven years before Harry Potter, and eerily similar. It’s about a boy with dark hair and glasses who, with his pet owl, discovers and navigates through a magical world. This isn’t a scary Halloween graphic novel, but it is full of magic and wonder enough for a reader of any age during the magic season that is October.

  1. 30 Days of Night by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith (illus.)

If you think this is familiar to a movie that came out a few years ago, you would be right. In fact, the movie was based off of this graphic novel. It takes place in a town in Alaska where the sun doesn’t rise for 67 days during winter. During this time, a horde of vampires attacks the sleepy town. If you are looking for the gore and guts for your Halloween GN, this is a great pick.

  1. Troll bridge by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran (illus.)

I know it’s another Neil Gaiman, but there can never be too much of him, especially during the spooky Halloween season. The book is about a boy who is haunted his whole life by a troll, which feasts on his fear and regret. Eventually Jack has to find the courage to fight this beast to finally be free. An adaption of the original, this is the best way to read this spooky, Halloween-felt story.

Have a spooky, graphic-filled Halloween!
