Continuing in our favorite summer reads by genre series, we have our favorite mystery summer reads.
So far we have had contemporary and romance, so this week we are focusing on our brain twisting, adventurous mystery books:
- The Monogram Murders: Hercule Poirot Mysteries – The New Hercule Poirot Mystery by Sophie Hannah & Agatha Christie
This one is in here because if you haven’t read an Agatha Christie, then summer is the time to start. Her mysteries are great classics for any mystery lover, and this particular story is a great one to start with. This book, written by Sophie Hannah, is an excellent channeling of Agatha Christie and her story characters. If you love Agatha Christie, this is definitely one to enjoy.
- Summer in the South: A Novel by Cathy Holton
This one is a great summer Southern mystery. After a personal Tragedy, a Chicago writer named Ava visits her friend’s family house in the South and secrets and mysteries begin to unfold. Truths are revealed about the families past mingling with Fitzgerald, Hemingway, and Faulkner and Ava struggles to write the true story of this family. This is a great summer mystery if you love Southern styled stories. The author is also known for her previous book, Beach Trip.
- What Dies in Summer by Tom Wright
This book has been compared to murder mysteries such as The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. It is considered a Southern Gothic coming-of-age novel, involving a woman with a past in law enforcement and a murder in a field. Its considered a page turner from the very beginning, which seems like a great, quick beach read.
- Pleasure Island by Anna-Lou Weatherley
This story has a real Clue feeling to it, replaced with an island and some summer tans. Couples arrive on an island expecting an island getaway. What they get is secrets, scandal, and betrayal as someone watches them from afar. This book has that great old-fashioned mystery structure fit into a modern summer vacation. Definitely a fun one, especially if you are on an island yourself.
This is a great middle grade for anyone who loves the classic mystery children series style. The story starts as a quiet week on the beach in summer, and turns into a bunch of mysterious events that all seem to link up to a missing girl and a suspicious boat. It takes place in the Washington Coast and Olympic Rainforest as Samantha and Ally turn to their brothers to help them solve the case. Definitely a fun read for a middle grader who you want to continue reading through the summer.
- In Search of the Fog Zombie: A Mystery About Matter (Summer Camp Science Mysteries) by Lynda Beauregard
This book is a children’s summer mystery book. It starts at Camp Dakota, where the kids begin to hear rumors of a fog zombie. The kids try to track down the Fog Zombie with science experiments. The back of the book includes a lot of fun science experiments as well. It’s a fun read and a really great book to keep kids learning throughout the summer.
